Pastoral Care Worker - Long Term Care Facilities

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Pastoral Care work attends to the spiritual needs of Lutheran congregants and others in Thunder Bay long term care facilities.
The successful candidate will demonstrate the following competencies:
  1. Patience and understanding of gerontology.
  2. Resiliency - an ability to develop and nurture relationships with citizens.
  3. Relationship building with long term care staff, other residence care providers and volunteers
  4. Organization and flexibility
  5. organization of volunteer support
  6. attention to and communication of changing health and safety requirements of facilities
  7. attention to and communication of schedule changes
  8. Counselling (theological understanding): The ability to help people face specific issues and struggles in life by understanding the spiritual needs of the individual and communicating comfort based on those needs.
  9. Self awareness and humility. Recognize when needs of individuals are not within personal/professional skill sets and recommend/facilitate introduction to alternative support as required. (ie. Therapists)
  10. Attentive and respectful - demonstrate respect for alternative views, religious or otherwise.

Expectations:
Support individuals attendance of Lutheran services -organize volunteers for mobility support and support for service (ie musicians) Currently 9 services per month.
Support individuals upon request for spiritual counselling including but not limited to prayer, singing and listening.

The role is currently 20 hours per week. Schedule is flexible with exception of attendance of services.
Must have reliable transportation to long term care facilities.

Requirements
One unit of Supervised Pastoral Education is an asset but not required.
Training and/or experience in working with the elderly, the sick and the dying is required.
Good knowledge of gerontology (required) and of Lutheran theology (asset)
Able to speak English is required. Ability to speak Finnish is an asset.
A knowledge of and respect for differing religious convictions is required.
Should be a good listener, a warm, cheerful and outgoing person who is sensitive to the needs and feelings of others and able to keep a confidence.
A member in good standing with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada or Lutheran Church-Canada is an asset but not required.

Hourly wage:
30.41 - 33.29 per hour
